Description

Nebular Crush is an action arcade shooter / platformer hybrid. Combining retro pixel art and modern graphics effects, the game immerses the player in a dreamy digital world full of glowing, shimmering, geometries populated by alien lifeforms. The player controls a guitar-playing surfer flying on a magical surfboard through a bizarre and abstract alternate dimension. The game demands both skill and cunning, often rewarding more clever and careful play over mindless button mashing. Easy to learn but difficult to master, Nebular Crush aims to appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers alike.

History

Nebular Crush was originally designed as an interactive installation to promote an experimental surf rock band co-lead by Konrad. The game was projected during live shows along with other reactive visualizations created by Tom. A pivotal moment in early development was the decision to make the player’s avatar a guitar-wielding surfer. This formative period shaped the general aesthetic of the game. The game had to be very accessible and visually stimulating. This led to the use of 80’s arcade game mechanics with simple controls. To add to the challenge of the game the graphics were designed to be mesmerizing and overwhelming. The game quickly outgrew its sideshow status and took on a life of its own expanding in scope and complexity. Further inspirations were drawn from the team’s mutual interest in generative processes, chaos theory, psychedelia, cellular life and a general wonder and appreciation for science and mathematics.

  • "It’d be wrong to call it a bullet hell shooter, it’s more of a ‘speed hell’ shooter as it’s the speed the screen moves that’s the real danger in this game. "
